Tooth sealing
Dental sealing is a quick and effective way to protect irregular occlusal surfaces of teeth against decay. This oral care option is often recommended for children and teenagers. The little ones need this extra method of protection mainly because they do not have the dexterity and patience necessary to maintain proper dental hygiene.
Adolescents, on the other hand, are in a growth period dominated by hormonal and behavioral changes that will affect both eating habits and personal dental hygiene. Moreover, the gradual loss of baby teeth and the eruption of permanent teeth often brings with it some difficulties in brushing and flossing.
Dental sealants act as a protective barrier and are applied to the areas most susceptible to tooth decay. They consist of a thin film of material that fills the grooves and irregular fissures of teeth, thus preventing food debris retention, which will reduce the risk of caries at this level.
The procedure is short and painless, in most cases the use of our handpiece and anaesthesia is not necessary so it does not trigger anxiety in either of our patients. Even more, because it is so easy to go through, it can help establish a relationship of trust and friendship with the dentist.
Our recommendation is to schedule your child’s first consultation around the age of 3, or even earlier, especially if you have suspicions of dental or maxillary disorders, tooth eruption etc. During childhood and adolescence, the frequency of regular check-ups may be higher, but it is generally indicated once every 6 months.
How are dental sealants applied?
The application only takes a few minutes. First, the teeth are cleaned with an abrasive paste and then dried. Once they are ready, an acid solution is applied to the chewing surfaces to roughen their texture. This gives the sealant better adhesion. After rinsing and drying the teeth from the acid solution, sealants are painted onto the chewing surface of the teeth. A special LED light is directed to the surface of the painted tooth for a complete curing process. Sometimes small adjustments are needed to make the bite comfortable.
How long does dental sealing last?
With a good oral hygiene routine, a tooth sealing can last up to 10 years. In general, proper brushing and flossing and regular visits to our dental office will maintain optimal oral health, including regular check-ups of dental sealings. In case they are worn off or chipped, your dentist will make the necessary repairs.
